Note on Husband: Douglas ARTHUR - shared note

2000: Desert Watch Published

2004: Forty Men, Eight Horses published

Refer to the Notes of Bryan Middleton.

Douglas' first taste of action in WWII, was in North Africa. It was here that he took part in the first significant victory for the British during the war; the Battle of Bida Fomm, Libya in the Western Desert. After the battle was over, the Italian soldiers were required to hand over all weapons, armaments and personal effects to the British. Douglas ended up acquiring a watch from an Italian officer. His idea was to give it to his father Robert after the end of the war. He placed the watch in an old Cherry Blossom boot polish tin for safe keeping.

His next theatre of action was in Greece, then he was sent to Crete were he was taken prisoner by the Germans. He spent the remainder of the war based in a prisoner of war camp in a town called Wolfsburg in eastern Austria. During this period, he was put to work mainly as a manual labourer, felling trees, working in a brick factory, and working on building sites.

While he was there, he met Bryan Middleton who was a medical orderly in the camp. At some stage Bryan was ordered back to England to accompany severely wounded soldiers in an exchange program organised by the Swiss Red Cross. Douglas asked Bryan if he would take the watch back with him and pass it on to his father. Unbeknown to Douglas, Bryan never made it back, since the exchange program did not work out and Bryan was not returned to the same POW camp.

So like Douglas, Bryan did not return to England until after the end of the war and at the first opportunity he had, Bryan gathered up the watch and went to 26 Vanbrugh Crescent to return the watch to Douglas. He knocked on the door, which was opened by a young lady, who unbeknown to him at the time was to become his wife, Jean Amy.

The point of the story is that if it had not been for the watch in the Cherry Blossom shoe polish tin, Bryan would never have met Jean, and the migration of the Arthur brothers and sisters to California would probably never have taken place.
